Electricity is one of those things where the small warning signs really matter. Unlike a leaky tap that gives you weeks to sort it, some electrical faults can burn a house down in an afternoon. If you spot any of these five in your London home, don't wait.
1. A socket that feels warm to the touch
A plug or socket that's noticeably warm — even without anything charging in it — is an urgent one. It usually means a loose connection is arcing behind the faceplate, which generates heat and can, over time, ignite the surrounding materials.
If a socket is warm, unplug everything from it and stop using it. Then get a Part P registered electrician out this week, not next month.
2. Your RCD trips repeatedly
A residual current device (RCD) is the safety switch in your consumer unit that flips when it detects a leak of current to earth. Occasional trips are normal — a faulty kettle, water in an outdoor socket. But if you're resetting it more than once a week, or if it trips as soon as you flip it back on, something's leaking current continuously.
In older London flats (and there are a lot of them) this is often a decades-old immersion heater or a corroded shower unit. It needs identifying — not just resetting and hoping.
3. Flickering or dimming lights across multiple rooms
Lights flickering only in one room, only when you turn on the toaster, is usually a bulb or a shared circuit under load. That's mostly harmless.

That specific "burning plastic" or slightly fishy chemical smell around a socket, switch, or the consumer unit itself is the smell of overheating insulation. It is one of the earliest warning signs of an electrical fire.
Turn the affected circuit off at the consumer unit and call an electrician the same day. If the smell is strong or the socket looks discoloured, ring the fire brigade as a precaution.
5. Buzzing, humming or crackling from a socket or the fuse box
A quiet hum from a consumer unit is often fine. A loud buzz, a crackling sound, or an intermittent electrical hissing is not. It means components are struggling with the load and arcing internally.
This one is especially common in London houses that have had multiple owners over the decades and picked up bits of unofficial extension work. Get a qualified electrician to look at your consumer unit — modern ones (RCBOs, split-load units) are miles safer than the old wire-fuse boards still lurking in a lot of London properties.
